Discover the highlights of Italy’s Amalfi coast on foot

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Mountains
jut steeply out of the Mediterranean and picturesque towns nestled in the
coves below. Walking the ancient hillsides studded with lemon groves and
framed by deep gorges, we descend from the Agerola Plain to the quaint towns
of Positano, Ravello and of course Amalfi itself. No visit to the Bay of
Naples would be complete without a trip to see the remains of Pompeii under
the imposing volcanic cone of Mount Vesuvius. The best is saved till last
with arguably the world’s best coastal walk: the ‘Walk of the Gods’. Away
from the trails we partake in a favourite traditional pastime and sample
incredible food and wine just like the Italians do.

*Why with Exodus? *

The perfect combination of idyllic coastal views, heritage sites and
picturesque towns make the Amalfi Coast our most popular destination for
walking. We have been operating this trip for over 15 years, using the
comfortable Hotel Due Torri run by the friendly Acampora family who offer
genuine Italian hospitality and ensure everyone has a wonderful stay.

Cycling profile

Day 1

Those on group flights fly to Naples, where they will be met by their tour
leader on arrival. A transfer of approximately 1 hour 20 minutes takes us to
the Hotel Due Torri, our base for the week in the village of Bomerano, on the
Agerola plains above the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy a warm welcome from our local
hosts, the Acampora family, before settling in. Land only clients can arrive
at any time, although we do recommend to join the group at the airport as
public transport options to the hotel are limited.

Day 2

From the hotel it’s a short stroll to the village square (or in the case of
Bomerano, a triangle) and the start of today’s walk. The circular route
provides a good chance to stretch the legs; following a mixture of paths and
tracks we ascend to the top of Monte Tre Calli to be rewarded with
spectacular wide-open views of the jagged coastline and seemingly endless
blue sea. The Agerola Plain and the village of Bomerano are laid out below us
and on a clear day we can see as far as the famous island of Capri, a haven
and idyllic hideaway for many celebrated artists and writers over the past
200 years. After admiring the majestic scenery descend to Bomerano and enjoy
some rest time before a hearty dinner.

Day 3

Start walking towards Amalfi, a town popular with the British since Edwardian
times when the upper classes favoured it as a pleasant place to spend their
winters. The route has a downhill bias, following the path from Bomerano at
700m to the shores of the Mediterranean, accompanied by wonderful coastal
views. There are sections of steps today (approx. 2000 in total), but there
are also plenty of opportunities to rest and go at your own pace. On arrival,
you will see the large Duomo (Cathedral) dominating the town with its
brightly-coloured tiled cupola (dome), which along with the baroque facade
and interior, is a typical example of regional architecture. Take some time
to explore the town, swim in the small bay or enjoy a well-earned gelato
before taking the transfer back to Bomerano.

Day 4

Transfer to the Bay of Naples, the area spanning between the region’s
capital city, Naples, and the town famed for its lemon groves, Sorrento.
Situated on the lower foothills of the volcano dominating the Gulf, Pompeii
was a thriving port town until Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption spanning two
days in 79AD during which the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for
1700 years, Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage site as the perfectly
preserved remains give us an amazing insight into life in a Roman city,
complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have
walls adorned with detailed frescoes. You may take some time to explore the
site this morning, perhaps opting for a detailed tour accompanied by a local
guide. After lunch, travel by bus high up onto the slopes of Vesuvius to view
the volcanic crater. Depending on weather conditions, it may be possible to
take one of the many extended walks around the caldera and beyond, led by an
expert volcanologist (optional).

Day 5

Today’s walk starts in Ravello, a town much favoured by the Bloomsbury set
and other artists and intellectuals due to its secluded location and
inspirational scenery. Before setting off for the walk we have some free time
to explore the town and visit Villa Cimbrone or Villa Rufolo with their
meticulously landscaped gardens and breath-taking views out to the sea
(optional).  The route today is mostly downhill but it does include a
considerable amount of steps. After descending and taking a quick stop in the
village of Pontone, we continue through wooden bridges and shady paths
carpeted with wild flowers in season, to the beautiful moss-clad waterfalls
within the closed gates of the Valle delle Ferriere National Park. Finally,
following the stream gently downwards through lemon groves, past the shells
of former paper factories (a major local industry from the 12th to 19th
centuries) and mediaeval ironworks we reach Amalfi.

5 hours walking, 10km – 6.2 miles, 214m – 702ft up – 450m – 1476ft
down).

Day 6

Today we have a day at leisure to relax at the hotel or go down to the
seafront. The hotel also offers private transfers (payable locally) to the
most popular attractions in the region not covered during the rest of the
week, including the city of Herculaneum. Also destroyed during the disaster
of 79AD, Herculaneum was buried in mud rather than ash and it is said that
this lead to the site being even better preserved than the bigger Pompeii.
You might instead choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri and the
funicular through lemon groves up to Capri town. These optional excursions
can be arranged locally by your leader. Alternatively, spend the free day by
the pool or in true Italian style in a café, sipping espresso and watching
the world go by!

Day 7

A fitting finale to the week is one of the world’s finest day walks. Leaving
the hotel it’s a short stroll through the quiet village of Bomerano before we
join the ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Walk of the Gods), thus named as it
provides some of the most evocative views in the world, of ragged cliffs
speckled with tiny villages and extensive views of the sparkling
Mediterranean sea. The route follows undulating hills, carpeted with flowers
in season, the contours of the land and the coast. The trail is broken by
insights into local life, passing shepherds huts and ancient stone houses
carved into the limestone before we descend a long series of steps to the
colourful Positano, an almost vertical town clinging to the rock face of a
sheltered bay. Take some time to explore the alleyways lined with wisteria
and designer boutiques or have a dip in the clear water of the beachfront
before returning to Bomerano by boat and bus (seasonal) in the late
afternoon. During the week many meals will have included some delicious local
smoked mozzarella cheese and before dinner, we will have the chance to see
how it is made and taste the mouth-wateringly fresh final product.

Day 8

Trip ends in Bomerano.

Absolutely amazing Amalfi!

Summary:
I booked this trip at the last minute, bagged the last space and feel very
lucky. The walking, the views, the history, the food, the wine and my group
(the best ever 😉 and excellent guide Severio made this trip fantastic and
unforgettable. So much is packed into this itinerary with the beautiful
walking trails, stunning views, watching pasta, pizza and cheese making,
walking with a volcanologist on the crater rim of Vesuvio, and guided tour of
Pompeii. I felt fortunate to also take advantage of optional trips to Capri
and Herculaneum.

The itinerary is busy. Getting around this part of Italy is not cheap if
you’re thinking of doing your own thing at any point. There’s really very
little time for shopping, which was absolutely fine for me but may be a
problem for others. Definitely bring swimwear.

Question:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Answer:
Grazie mille for a wonderful time.

Walking The Amalfi Coast – AMAZING!

Summary:
An absolute must-see and do trip! Everything about the trip was
incredible!…..from as soon as we arrived at the airport to be picked up and
taken to our hotel to the very last day and moment we were dropped off for
the return journey back. Our tour guide Martina is such a warm-hearted,
thoughtful, bubbly individual who everyday had the biggest smile and made
sure each of us within the group were getting the most from our walking and
enjoying all the scenery along the way, she is a fantastic leader with lots
and lots of enthusiasm!
The hotel we stayed in, Ztorri, is perfect! The hotel staff are extremely
lovely welcoming people who accommodate anything you might need while staying
there. They always went the extra mile catering for me being the only
vegetarian in my group and food was always so delicious and fulfilling. The
room I stayed in was immaculately clean and bed very comfortable to get a
good night sleep each day, and I especially liked the mini kettle provided in
the room with tea/coffee!!
Each day I would be greeted with so many smiles and all the staff are lovely
to each other too which for me creates the most nicest atmosphere to be
in……they honestly are a true Italian Family who I could see work very
hard to keep their guests the happiest they can be….I definitely would
recommend this specific hotel to all my family and friends when they are in
Amalfi, as I know they will be looked after like royalty, be served the most
delicious Italian food, and will have their expectations exceeded and much
more!
The Amalfi Coast is beautiful more than you can imagine, the walks we did
took us to panoramic views of the Amalfi and all around is crystal blue sea,
with all the history and incredible scenery among us. For me I particularly
loved the time we had in Ravello the most, as they have a place called Villa
Cimbrone there which is the most breath taking garden I have ever
seen…….the moment I entered I knew I could spend the whole day
there….it is so beautifully created with all the different plants and paths
and views of the coast, that I cannot fully describe the beauty of it…..its
somewhere you will be speechless as the views and environment are just that
incredible….I think it should be a top three wonder of the world! You will
see for yourself if you go!

walking. A good pair of stout walking shoes and poles are essential.

Answer:
Too much time was spent in Amalfi and Positano, kicking heel. The walks

A really good, well balanced holiday with an inspired leader

Summary:
Walking the Amalfi Coast was a really delightful holiday. True enough,
walking in the hills in the middle of summer is not everybody’s idea of fun
but most of the walking was at either a reasonably cool height or close to
the sea breezes. Almost all the walks were at least partly in shade which
made a lot of difference in a week of cloudless skies. The walking was not
that difficult and needed only a moderate amount of fitness. Plenty of breaks
for fluids were factored in.

Walking was interspersed with two days off. One at Pompeii and Vesuvius; a
second with a range of alternatives.

Very comfortable friendly hotel with excellent simple Italian food.
Delicious!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The Walk of the Gods over to Positano was beautiful with spectacular views
down the coast.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Martina was an outstanding group leader. It would be hard to improve on her
skills. We were a pretty mixed bunch. Sixteen of us, aged sixteen to eighty
from Britain, America and the Antipodes might have been a bit of a challenge
for any group leader but she got it absolutely spot on.

Those of us who saw it will never forget her dance with the goatherd at the
Bomerano World Music Festival!

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
Although the overall grading of the holiday is about right, be prepared to do
some sustained uphill walking, even if the distances are not that long and
the ascent each day is fairly moderate. Anyone who is reasonably fit and
active can manage this.

Andiamo!

Summary:
Fantastic holiday which exceeded my expectations for my first walking holiday
with Exodus. The scenery on all the walks was breathtaking, the stops for
“elevenses ” and lunch were spectacular and exploring the picturesque towns
and diving into the sea at the end of the walks was amazing. The itinerary
was well-balanced with time to explore the towns/villages after or before the
walks. The hotel and food was excellent and we enjoyed the cooking and pizza
demonstrations. They also catered very well for dietary requirements. Our
guide Vania was excellent and as a group we got on very well! Overall, an
incredible holiday!

Rating: 5

Question:
What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Answer:
The Paths of the God walk – the longest but most enjoyable of them all.

Question:
What did you think of your group leader?

Answer:
Vania was an excellent guide – she was enthusiastic, organised, engaging and
great fun to be around. She set a good pace for the week and supported
members of the group who suffered from vertigo by helping them through the
challenging sections. What really stood out was how well liked Vania is by
the local hotel staff and cafe staff etc; her kindness and enthusiasm is
recognised by all.

Question:
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Answer:
I would say sections of the walks were more moderate than leisurely. There
are a lot of steps in most of the walks and some up-hill sections were steep.
Some sections are exposed. The heat added an extra challenge. Read the trip
notes!

Activity Levels

Activity Levels range from Leisurely to Tough, the grading takes into account the daily cycling distances and terrain, as well as any technical riding skill required. We also consider the number of cycling days as there can be a cumulative affect from tiredness on a longer trip and the type of accommodation used, as this can also influence your day to day recovery.

If you are in any doubt, please give us a call on +353-1-607 9900 or email us.

Activity level 1 - Leisurely Activity level 1: Leisurely

If you can ride a bike and enjoy gentle exercise, these are an ideal introduction to a cycling holiday. No routes are entirely flat, so expect some short climbs and descents. Maximum daily height gain is approximately 250 metres and daily distances rarely exceed 50kms (32 miles), any longer days are often optional.

Activity level 3 - Moderate Activity level 3: Moderate

Most people who enjoy a weekend riding at home will enjoy a Moderate trip. You need to be in good health and reasonably fit. Ideal for occasional cyclists, or as a more relaxed trip for fitter riders. Moderate off-road trips require no previous experience. Distances rarely exceed 70kms (43 miles) per day.

Activity level 5 - Challenging Activity level 5: Challenging

For any ride at this level, fitness is important. Challenging trips require confidence in your ability and physical condition. They are equivalent to an extended period of cycling at home. Previous mountain biking experience is essential for Challenging off road trips as they will involve some technical riding.

Activity level 7 - Tough Activity level 7: Tough

Previous experience of the cycling style or surface is a must as these routes have long cycling days and tougher terrain on both road and off road trips. You need complete confidence in your fitness and technical ability to cope with difficult or steep terrain, rough surfaces and longer distances. Ideal for those seeking a challenge!

Split grades

In order to provide more accuracy, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or ‘split’ grade, for example 2: Leisurely/Moderate.
